Future Activators Student Testimonial

Avanish Singh, an architect and aspiring climate activist talks about his experience on Innovate Communities, Future Activator Programme

I am happy to share previous trimester work for a pilot project with Innovate Communities as an extension of a module on “Climate Carbon Cities Change, “where myself, Liniya Elezabath Siji, Alexandra Mitsakaki, Marion Auriel from the MSc in Architecture, Urbanism, and Climate Action in University College Dublin worked together on a multimedia project to showcase the challenges that Ballymun, an outer suburb of Dublin, Ireland, is facing and provide possible solutions that can be implemented in order to overcome those challenges. The topic of drugs has been selected for discussion by our group.

I would like to take a moment to thank Fiona Descoteaux, Philip Crowe, Miriam Lins, Stephen Wall, Mr. Andrew Montague, a former Irish Labour Party politician who served as Lord Mayor of Dublin from 2011 to 2012 and a Dublin City Councillor from 2004 to 2019 along with other stakeholders who enlightened us through their experiences and research work on stakeholder engagement and community development. In addition, I would like to thank my classmates who joined us during the project. I really enjoyed working with you all.

The programme has taught us several things primarily how community involvement plays a key role in the development of any project. Engaging with right stakeholders at the right time and in the right place for the right decision, is crucial for development. Involving community as a prime stakeholder can provide valuable insights and feedback, leading to better decision-making and improved project outcomes.

During the project we met a few residents of Ballymun, to hear their stories and how they suffered during the regeneration of their community, stemming from 1965. The examples demonstrated that with a proper plan in place and the involvement of the local community as key stakeholders, this project could have achieved better results.
