3 and 4D Mapping

These are techniques that assist social innovation by providing visual representations of the system as it is now and how we would like to see it in the future. In 3D mapping people come together and use physical objects to create a model of the situation as they experience it and what they hope it might change. 4D mapping goes a step further in which people use theatrical techniques- social presencing theatre – using bodily gestures, positioning  and expression to  convey their experience of a situation and how they relate to others in the system. Both these techniques can have deep personal and collective impact. They promote inclusivity and enable communication at a level that brings people much closer to a common vision of what is and what could be.
